Serving at the Altar

Learning to serve the Mass at the Altar is a challenge for young boys, and usually takes from 6 to 9 months of weekly study to accomplish.  Training should include two major components: first being the prayers and responses, and the second being the postures, gestures and other physical duties.

There are several positions at the Altar, which are quite like the different pieces on the chess board.  We have the Master of Ceremonies, or the MC, Thurifer and Boat Bearer, Acolytes, and Candlebearers.  There are others, but this is a great start to a very versatile crew of servers.

Angelus Press has a very nice audio CD for listening to and rehearsing the prayers and responses made at the Foot of the Altar, and during the rest of Mass.

I will post more resources for Server Training soon…
